                                          Welcome to

                                  The Marathon MultiMapPak vol.3
                                     Carnage Central

Maps are coming out at such a rapid pace these days that it's hard to keep up with what's good, what's lousy,
what might crash your machine hard...

Steve Wood (the creator of the Marathon Hyperarchive, the WWW front end to AMUG's enormous marathon
file archive) and Claude Errera (that's me - a Marathon fanatic who is letting this obsession get in the way
of his day job) came up with the idea of multipacks-collections of maps released to the general public,
including the maps themselves, any notes the authors included, supplementary files (like customized shape
files designed for that map), and basic notes from me (when necessary), indicating any problems found, or
simply what comes with each level.

This third iteration of the MultiMapPak contains a total of 21 levels, from 8 released maps. The unifying
theme is size. They are all small enough to play with two or three players (although most of them can handle
more without getting too crowded). A couple of these levels have already been included in other mappaks, but
the original idea behind paks was to allow lots of net play without switching maps, and if Circular Death and
Pillars fit the theme, why shouldn't they be included? ;) They are in alphabetical order (by original Map
name, not level name). The level mover used was Pfhorte 1.0d16 (68K), written by Steve Israelson (steve_israelson@mindlink.net), whose diligence and impressive work made these mappaks possible (in
more ways than one).

To use these, move or rename your Map file in your Marathon folder, drop in this file, and away you go!

Volume 3 consists of the following maps:

Level 0 Another Arena?!
Has a few nice twists, decent flow, and lots of baddies. Nice use of blocking structures.

Level 1 Dark & Light
This one's a bit bigger than some, but it has a good upstairs/downstairs thing going. Be sure
to use the Map key (or tab everything!).

Level 2 Main Street, USA
Really simple-just a wide open space with a couple of extra rooms. More baddies than you
can shake a stick at (or shoot, actually). There ain't no place to hide.

Levels 3-11 MKN's Maps, May 9, 1995
A collection of the levels Mike Neylon has done up to May 9 (hence the very descriptive title).
In general, these are great net levels. My favorites are World Wide Web and V8, but there aren't
any bad ones. (Okay, I'm not that fond of Fodder Wall, but it's fun once in a while.)

Levels 12-17 Modified Suicide Maps
These will raise your adrenaline level significantly. There's no finesse here, just plain old-fashioned
carnage. Pick up that Spanker, and blow someone up. Several of these levels make it easy to exceed 2 dpm/player,
even though they've got 3x rechargers in them. (Don't count on the rechargers-some levels don't have them.)
Killing fields is the only level I've ever played where I exceeded 4.5 kills/minute, and never died. (He wasn't
a total newbie, either.) Good for stress relief.

Level 18 Pillars Unto You
This is a very nice small arena-type level. The simple layout keeps the emphasis on killing each other, rather
than taking advantage of secrets. There are no safe sniper perches. There should be enough weapons to keep
at least three players (and maybe more) well-armed.

Level 19 Circular Death
Another no-secrets, kill-your-friends-or-die type level. Strategy can help here-figure out where the
teleporters go, and you can be waiting...

Level 20 A Day At The Mall
This one will be released in a 4- or 6-pak soon, but it makes a great 3-5 player game. It has rechargers,
but using them can be deadly...

Below you'll find the authors' original Readmes, with some minor formatting modifications for consistency.

Enjoy these maps, keep an eye out for the next bunch, and if you write a level, by all means, tell me about it!

And keep an eye on the Marathon Map page for new maps, updates to existing ones, and new paks! It's now in
two locations:

																		              	Another Arena?!

- Mark Brooks [rtfm@onramp.net]

Here's another map for Marathon. This arena contains the standard big, open area with little rooms off to the side. It is dimly lit, with recessed sniping perches. There is 1 Tozter and 4 Spankers available, a small horde of aliens, no shield rechargers, and lots of empty space. Oh yeah, there's also one secret room. This was a knock-off map. It took me very little time and I wasn't going to release it, but people enjoyed it here. It has been tested by 2-5 players all on PowerMacs and a few 68K macs. It plays ok with at least three, but 5 should make for a better game. If you have any problems, let me know. I used Phorte 1.0d15 PPC by Steve Israelson (steve_israelson@mindlink.net) to create the level.
If you have any problems or suggestions, please send me some e-mail. Just plain feedback would be nice too. Feel free to repost this map, unaltered, and with this doc. If you feel the need to alter the map, please ask before spreading it around and, even if you keep it to yourself, I'd like to know what you changed. If you enjoyed this map, you might want to try my other maps that are currently available:

Rocky's 6-Pak

0 - Docking Bay Gamma
	1 - Rocky's Arena
2 - Rocky's 5D Space
3 - Rocky's New Arena Lite
4 - Merry Go Round
5 - Bunkhouse

Pfhor Engineering Decks 0-6
This is the beginning of a multi-level single player adventure that has been net-ified. It won't work on a 68K Mac. It's best as a net level with at least 3 players, preferably 5. Look for more in the Pfhor series to come.

I'd like to thank Bungie for a great game, Steve I. for Phorte, Claude E. for suggestions and 68K testing, Tim, Ron, Larry, and Mike for some great net games.
And thank you for reading this.

																	           	      Dark & Light

Did you ever notice how much the lighting makes a difference in the
realism of a map?

I hope this looks a little realistic with all the shadows.
It seems to be a fun netlevel. There are a few not so
secret doors scattered on the level. Check the map and you will
see. Also be patient about the platforms. They do work. You just have to
wait a sec. You don't have to tell competitors that though.

In case any one would like to send comments write me at

Have fun 'thon'n.

Steve The Cartographer (swein@aol.com)
presents...

MAIN STREET, USA
You've decided to enjoy this lovely spring evening by going downtown to meet friends, catch a movie, or just hang out on the corner. Suddenly you hear some noise in the distance...

This map is more of a living movie than a level to play. Set your prefs to Total Carnage, sit back, and watch the fireworks! I recommend grabbing the invincie so you last long enough to appreciate the carnage. And remember, repeat to yourself "it's just a show, I should really just relax...."

                                	MKN's Maps May 9, 1995

Michael K. Neylon
email: mneylon@engin.umich.edu
Home Page: http://www.engin.umich.edu/labs/mel/menylon/

MKN's Maps is a collect of the following map files, all created by me (with their current version # and position in file)...

0 - The Dark (and Light) Side of the Moon 1.1
1 - Fodder Wall 1.1
2 - It's Not Easy Being Green 1.0
3 - Rising Sun 1.0
4 - The Subway Station 1.1
5 - The Pit 1.2
6 - I Could've Had a V8! 1.2
7 - World Wide Web 1.0
8 - Let Me See Your Hall Pass 1.0

All of these are intended for network play, although all but #3 (Rising Sun) can be done as Solo training levels.

These maps were created with Pfhorte 1.0d15, that excellent editor written by Steve Israelson (steve_israelson@mindlink.net). Pfhorte, other editors, more maps, and lots of other great stuff can be found at ftp.amug.org, or via the Web with http://home.amug.org/~marathon.

To Use: Open your Marathon folder. Rename the Map file in the Marathon folder to some other name, or drag the Map file to a safe place. Drag the Map file in this folder into the Marathon folder, and make sure it is named "Map". Start Marathon, and away you go. If you wish to play these maps as Solo levels, note the level number from above, and hold down 'option' and 'command' while clicking on Begin New Game. At that dialog, type in the number above, and press OK.

Comments and Suggestions are welcome!

SHAMELESS PLUG!

Most of these are maps based on ideas that others have given me, which I then have implemented and adapted for good Network play. Because of this, I feel that I can take your ideas and put them in a Marathon map. If you would like this, just mail me your ideas, and I'll work them into a map.

                                                  Suicide Maps, v.2

Modified by Claude Errera (errera@ese.ogi.edu)

Not too long ago, someone unknown uploaded a package to AMUG called Suicide Maps.
It consisted of 10 bungie solo levels that had been modified to be networkable,
with lots and lots and lots of weapons, teleporters where needed, and walls stuck
in to make the sizes manageable in normal net play. It was a quick hack, though.
The entire original levels were still there, taking up useless space, and a few
glitches had been introduced during the modification process.

Nevertheless, several of these maps became favorites here, simply because of their
sheer carnage potential. We routinely exceed 7 dpm for three-person games on
Neither High Nor Low. If you've had a bad day, 60+ deaths in 8 minutes will
relieve huge amounts of stress.

I've taken what I consider to be the best six of the original ten levels, and
cleaned them up. I've deleted all extraneous polygons, fixed a few problems,
aligned a few textures, and made them compatible with both 68K and PPC machines.
(Several levels, notably Beware of Low-Flying Defense Drones, crashed 68K machines.)

If anyone comes across any problems I missed, let me know. If anyone knows who did
the original Suicide Maps, I'd like to know that, too.

Enjoy, and keep killing!

																														 Pillars Unto You

[There is no readme for this map. From a personal note from the author:]

Actually, it was just a test map for a few ideas. I've never actually played
it much. If you want it though, it's yours. Feel free to change anything or
everything (you're right, it needs more weapons).

This is designed for net play. Feel free to add weapons, ammo, baddies, or whatever. Also make any modifications you wish, except that if the map is still recognizable afterwards, give me credit. (please!)

Also, I would love FEEDBACK!! let me know what you think!

																		              	A Day at the Mall

- Mark Brooks [rtfm@onramp.net]

This is a smaller level comparatively. There are no Tozters, but there are several Spankers available, a medium horde of aliens, and four shield rechargers. The shield rechargers are on a central pillar, making them fantastic targets. I am told that, if set to Kindergarten with three people, there is a great balance of Pfhor, weapons, and powerups. This has been tested by 2-3 players , some on PowerMacs and some not. This map has been tested on 68K Macs and works!!! I used Phorte 1.0d15 PPC by Steve Israelson (steve_israelson@mindlink.net) to create the levels.
If you have any problems or suggestions, please send me some e-mail. Just plain feedback would be nice too. Feel free to repost this map, unaltered, and with this doc. Yet another net map with wide open spaces! PPC only.
